Social trends in the world of Internet


Knowing which the most watched TV show is, the most read magazine or the newspaper with the highest circulation is part of the publicist's world, and with that information he organizes an offer for his clients. However, the information regarding cultural products used by people always allows us to see further: these trends set the pace of a society, tell us about its mood, how it has fun or gets worried, what it’s interested in and what it’s not.

The tendencies of cybernauts, in contrast with the rest of the cultural products consumers, can be measured quickly by using a tool that is available to everyone, and that is amazingly effective. Different from the questionable ratings that rate the preferences of television viewers from 6:00 to 2:00 a.m. (and the only people that have access to them are the ones that pay for them, who get them 72 hours later if they have the premium service), the newspaper circulation verifiers (that are owned by the same people as the newspapers themselves) or the best-seller book lists (written up by the Publishing Houses), Internet offers different free services so we can get detailed information about trends and visit frequencies of those sites that are spread all over the web.

Just days ago dnScoop was added to this tool: it is a service that provides all sorts of information about a domain. Just by typing in the address it gives us the age of the page, ranking, verifies whether or not the incoming links are valid, Alexa traffic, pages indexed by search engines, status and even an estimate of the site calculated on that very information.

About half way through last year an even more interesting service appeared on the Internet: Google launched Google Trends. This new tool allows you to see the volume of existing searches for any term and know, among other things, from what part of the world there are more or less searches for that word. You can also compare several words at the same time, to see which is the most sought. For example, try the following: go to Google Trends and type in: London, New York, Madrid (just like that, separated by a comma) and you will see how people have searched for information about those places. It's the same for any subject.

With these services we can get a hint of where modern man’s desire is headed.
