The U.S. Government is currently building a 1,126 kilometer wall (700 miles) on the border with Mexico. There isn’t anything like it in modern times. It is the only physical barrier that divides the underdeveloped world from the developed one.
The Berlin Wall, which we used to call the “Wall of shame”, was only 120 kilometers (75 miles) and was built so that people wouldn’t leave East Germany.
Some walls are built to keep people in, but most are built to keep people out.
The U.S. Congress argues that it is to safeguard the borders after the attacks of 9/11. But there is no wall being built on the Canadian border.
Analysts agree that it was a measure taken in sight of the elections: the politicians want to show that they are serious about solving the illegal immigration problem.
A few days ago in Mexico President Nestor Kirchner stated that the wall was not only an offense for that country, but also for the other Latin American countries, as well as the rest of the world.
